PHOENIX The Greco-Roman world is covered in the booth at Phoenix Ancient Art, which is tricked out to look like the interior of the Pantheon in Rome. The central work in Phoenix’s booth is also a figurative sculpture: a svelte Aphrodite carved in marble from the 1st century B.C. to the 1st century A.D. whose arms were restored at some point, then removed for authenticity’s sake, which makes her look a bit like the Venus de Milo.

Hicham Aboutaam of Phoenix Ancient Art, New York City and Geneva, featured this early Second Century BCE marble sculpture depicting the young Dionysus trouncing a panther. The circa 550-500 BCE black-figure neck amphorae, left and right, are also decorated with Dionysian scenes.

At Phoenix Ancient Art of Geneva, the brothers Ali and Hicham Aboutaam display a terra cotta urn painted around 540-520 B.C. by a Greek artist. In a masterly hunting scene that looks like a ritual performance, athletic men in the nude are seen racing. A boar confronting danger points its head down, one front leg raised, as if about to charge the enemy.
