Hicham Aboutaam Brings a More Colorful Pantheon to TEFAF New York
NEW YORK, Oct. 18, 2017 / PRNewswire / — Hicham Aboutaam Brings a More Colorful Pantheon to TEFAF New York
This October marks the second annual showing of the world renowned TEFAF FALL art fair in New York at the historical Park Avenue Armory. The inaugural fair last year was a grand success with Phoenix Ancient Art building a miniature Roman Pantheon as their stand design, featuring cornices, niches, vitrines, and of course the glowing oculus from the center of the dome, all reminiscent of the interior of the famous Roman temple. This year Hicham Aboutaam is bringing that stand back to life with a new flavor. A color scheme derived from the colors of different ancient stones such as porphyry, pink marble, giallo antico, breccia, alabaster, and white and red granite. The Dutch master stand-builder, Stabilo, has chartered new territory with this concept.
Absorbed by the colorful display will be treasures, big and small, from the ancient world of Greece and Rome, Egypt and the Balkan peninsula. One of the highlights is a masterful Roman Splashed Glass Bottle with Two Handles, formerly in the Benzian collection of Lucerne, Switzerland. The technique of splashed glass with its sprinkled seeds of beautiful colors was celebrated in the early Imperial times, especially during the Julian-Claudian period of the 1st century A.D. Certainly intended for the wealthy classes of society, such vessels would have been inspired by the famous “millefiori” molded vases, which were also luxury items.
Hicham Aboutaam is thrilled to bring the colors of splashed glass to the colorful TEFAF Pantheon and he adds, “It’s fascinating to discover this intact and stunning splashed glass bottle with its dazzling colors when the only other intact one that we know of is in the Corning Museum. Such splashed glass vases or fragments mostly come from sites in the Alpine regions of Northern Italy, and the Swiss areas of Ticino and Vindonissa, where different Roman legions were stationed during the reign of emperors Tiberius, Caligula, and Claudius.”
TEFAF NY will be open at the Park Avenue Armory, New York from 12 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Oct. 28, 30 & 31 and from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. on Oct. 29 and Nov. 1, Stand 73.
